Myanmar prisoners' hunger strike worries Suu Kyi

Updated 10:31 a.m., Thursday, June 2, 2011
YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — Myanmar pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi
has expressed concern about the health of some political prisoners who are staging a hunger strike.

Suu Kyi spoke Thursday after meeting U.S. Sen. John McCain, who is visiting Myanmar to assess prospects for reform under its new nominally civilian government.

Thailand-based Assistant Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) says the hunger strikers want a better diet and other improvements in their conditions. The group monitors the situation of an estimated 2,000 political detainees in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma.
Suu Kyi told reporters she worried about the health of the prisoners, who began striking two weeks ago. She said, if the government continued to treat political prisoners like this, "it is a sad affair."
