YANGON, MYANMAR (BNO NEWS) -- A series of bomb explosions on Friday
hit several major cities in Myanmar, injuring at least three people.
According to Mizzima news, three powerful bombs exploded within
minutes of each other in the cities of Mandalay, Naypyitaw, and Maymyo. A
few hours later, a second bomb explosion hit Mandalay.
The first bomb exploded at noon in downtown Mandalay, injuring one
traffic police officer. The bomb was placed in a sport utility vehicle
parked in front of a hotel. An eyewitness said that he saw ambulances
take two injured people from the scene.
The second and third explosions occurred in an empty house in
Naypyitaw, the capital, and an empty house in Maymyo, which is home to a
large number of military schools. The explosions occurred in two-story
homes nearly simultaneously.
The fourth bomb is reported to have exploded in a rubbish dump in
Mandalay at about 3 p.m local time. According to authorities, the area
around the dump site was cordoned off by security forces two hours prior
to the explosion.
Military officers are investigating the bomb scenes.
Last month, a bomb explosion on a Myanmar train killed at least two
people near the capital. The incident occurred as the U.S. Deputy
Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific affairs Joseph
Yun arrived in Myanmar to begin his two-day visit for talks with the
country's new government, which was formed on March 30 and is led by
President Thein Sein.
